He has maintained his non-guilt about the allegations

Ex- FBI head James the former director has denied the charges to making false statements to congressional representatives and impeding a lawmaking procedure.

Mr Comey's lawyer submitted the response acting as his counsel in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

The defense lawyer stated he would seek to have the case dismissed for multiple factors including that his defendant, a opponent of President Donald Trump, was being singled out.

James Comey was charged just days after Trump pressured his attorney general to take action against him.

Court Developments

At the proceedings on mid-week, Comey's lawyer Patrick Fitzgerald advised the court they planned to submit several legal requests to dismiss the legal matter before a trial, arguing the legal action was retaliatory and that a federal prosecutor was improperly assigned to assume control of the legal matter.

The former director's case was first managed by the original attorney, who resigned under influence from Trump after his investigation into a different political adversary - the New York official - did not succeed to file indictments.

Judicial Environment

James Comey seemed in positive mood as he came into the courtroom on mid-week, speaking with his lawyers and being lighthearted. He was accompanied by his partner, Patrice Failor and child his daughter, a government attorney who the former government recently fired.

Upon hearing to the court state his rights and the dual charges against him in court on Wednesday, the defendant was questioned if he understood the accusations.

"I do your honour. Thank you," he informed the judge.

Historical Information

Mr Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013-2017 and was terminated about several months into the former president's first administration as national leader. At the period, he was leading an investigation into foreign election meddling and whether there were any links between Moscow and the presidential campaign.

Throughout his leadership, Mr Comey sparked a backlash from liberal politicians when he announced just days before the 2016 election that he was investigating Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. Indictments against Clinton were never brought, causing disapproval from conservative politicians as well.

Present Charges

The federal government assert the former director provided false information to the legislature during a congressional hearing in 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the previous examination as well as the election interference investigation. They claim he deceived the Senate by claiming he had not approved an individual at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to disclose to news outlets information about the FBI investigations.

Government lawyers also allege the defendant of "improperly attempting to sway, block and slow" the panel by making false statements to it.

Personal Comments

Via social media Mr Comey posted to his online platform after he was accused, he said he was wrongly accused and charged Trump of acting like a "autocrat".

"My family and I have been aware for considerable time that there are consequences to opposing Mr Trump," he commented. "We refuse to live on our bended knee."
"I'm innocent," he stated further. "Therefore proceed with a legal proceeding."

The accusations against Mr Comey came after the former president shared on digital channels calling for his attorney general, Pam Bondi, charge Mr Comey and others.
