The defender will sit out the English team's World Cup qualifying match against the Latvian side due to injury and the player – who did not play in England's 3-0 exhibition win over Wales at Wembley – will head back to his club the Bundesliga club.
The former Liverpool defender has been a key player in the team's defence this campaign but the national squad said no additional squad replacements were arranged for the qualification match in the Latvian capital on Tuesday.
The English side could earn a place for next year's World Cup with two matches to spare if they defeat Latvia on this Tuesday and outcomes in other matches in their qualifying group go their way.
